Spring Term 2017

Friday 7th April - Lift the Lid on Easter

On Friday morning the children took part in an extended Collective Worship.  Using resources from the Lift the Lid box (which was loaned to school by Elim Ryedale Church) they learnt more about the Easter story by sharing books, acting out the story and a team quiz.  The activities gave the children an opportunity to think about the Christian roots of Easter.  Please click here to view the photographs

Wednesday 5th April 2017 - Parents' Evening / Tea, Coffee and Cake Candle Lighters Fundraiser

We would like to thank everyone for supporting the Candlelighters fundraiser on Wednesday - £174.19 was raised.

31st March 2017 - North Yorkshire Health and Wellbeing Award

I am delighted to announce that the submission for the North Yorkshire Health and Wellbeing Award has been confirmed for both  St Hilda's and Hovingham, recognising the schools' commitment to health and wellbeing.  A healthy school is one that is successful in helping children and young people do their best and reach the full potential.  The next step is for both schools to submit a 'school story template' within three years in order to remain engaged with the award.

Tuesday 28th March 2017 - Ryedale Lions Club

We would like to say a big thank you to Ryedale Lions Club who are celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year and would like to thank their local community for all the support given to them over the years.  They are planning to plant a fruit tree in the grounds of each school in their area.  On Tuesday they visited us and have planted an apple tree to the left of the main gate, as you walk into school.

Friday 24th March 2017 - Red Nose Day

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who donated to Red Nose Day - £50 has been raised so far.  Thank you.

Thursday 2nd March 2017 - World Book Day

World Book Day is an international event, celebrated by over 100 countries.  We all enjoyed dressing up as book characters, playing games, making bookmarks and doing huge word searches.

Our school was invaded by The Demon Dentist, Funnybones, The Wicked Witch of the West and many other scary characters including Morticia. Whilst The Mad Hatter, The Queen of Hearts, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood brought fantasy and magic.  Wild animals, including Alex the lion, monkeys, Mog the Cat and dinosaurs, roamed our playground.  Peter Pan was followed by Tiger Lily, Tick Tock and Captain Hook but no one was harmed!  Star Wars characters, Batman and Spiderman, Paul from Spy Smuggler were there to protect us all.  And meanwhile Matilda watched but did not play any tricks on us...or did she?

27th Feb - 3rd March 2017 - Rowing Competition for all Primary Schools

It's almost time for the rowing competition to start again.  The rowing machines will arrive in school on Friday 17th February ready for the children to start the first week back after half term.  Key Stage 2 row for 3 minutes and Key Stage 1 row for 1 minute.

Monday 6th February 2017 - Box2bfit

Following on from the success of our Skip2bfit day last year, on Monday 6th February we had a Box2bfit day in school.  Children took part in boxing fitness training.  The exercises were incorporated into a number of circuits which are all set to music.  Pupils really enjoyed the 'Box2bfit' workshops and completed a variety of circuit training style activities.  This event was funded from our Sport Premium money and continues our plan to have a headline event each term designed to motivate and inspire.  Such events have included the visit of the Climbing Wall last summer and the visit of Chris Tomlinson, Olympic long jumper in the autumn.  Pupil feedback about all these events has been very positive and pupils were again complimented on their willingness to have a go and their manners. Well done everyone!

Friday 20th January 2017 - Youth Sport Trust Bronze Quality Mark

I am delighted to announce that very recently both St Hilda's, Ampleforth and Hovingham CE VC Primary Schools have been awarded the Youth Sport Trust Bronze Quality Mark for their commitment to physical education (PE) and school sport.  The Youth Sport Trust is a national charity that is building a brighter future for young people through the power of sport.  The Quality Mark is an online self-review tool which provides schools with a nationally recognised award for the quality of their PE and school sport.  The tool supports schools to audit their PE provision and identify priorities for their development.

Tuesday 13th December - "I'll tell thee a story of Christmas"

Our right Yorkshire Christmas production will take place in St Hilda’s school hall at 6:30pm on Tuesday 13th December.
After the performance there will be some refreshments and a raffle as The White Swan in Ampleforth have very generously donated a voucher to the school for two people to enjoy a “two course Sunday lunch” at the pub.  We will be selling tickets all day on Tuesday 13th December.  All money raised will go towards the Panto bus costs.

Monday 12th December - Pantomime Trip

Please be here by 8:20am on Monday morning as we need to leave school by 8:30am. Please also remember that a packed lunch from home is required too. There will be a short interval during the performance and we thought that it would be a good idea for each child to bring a small treat to eat at that point.  We will be eating our packed lunches in a room at the theatre after the performance and then coming back to school. We will be back before the end of the school day.

Friday 9th December - Gold Award

We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the Woodland Trust's Green Tree Schools - Gold Award

Thursday 25th November - Tree Planting

We have planted 30 trees around the school grounds, which were generously donated to us from The National Trust. The selection of trees included Hazel, Rowan and Silver Birch. This has allowed us to gain points towards our Green Tree Schools, Gold Award.

Friday 18th November - Children in Need goes Spotacular!

This year’s BBC Children in Need appeal is on Friday 18th November and it promises to be SPOTACULAR! As usual we will be joining in the fun and invite children (and staff) to come to school wearing something spotty. In exchange we will be collecting donations of £1.00 per child.  Thank you.

Penny Wars School Fundraiser from the 7th - 18th November

Each class will be given a large sweet jar with the task to fill it with as many 1p and 2p coins as they can, before the fortnight ends.  The coppers will then be counted and the class with the highest total wins.  However, there is a small catch, the other class can sabotage your money jar by placing any notes or coins that aren’t copper in them and when the contents of the jar are counted, these will be deducted from the total.  So, if you put a £1 coin into the other jar, they would need a hundred pennies to balance it out.  Funds raised from this game will be used to renew our equipment for wet breaks and lunchtimes and the winning class will get first play with the new equipment.

Poppy Appeal

Poppies are now available in the school office.  Please send in a donation if you would like to support this worthy cause.

Thursday 13th October - Molly's Marvellous Moustache

Class 1 really enjoyed their trip to Helmsley Arts Centre to see Molly's Marvellous Moustache on Thursday. The children thought it was very clever that so many characters could be played by only two people.  The story, about the adventures of Molly, took us into a Jungle, into the cockpit of an plane, into a science lab and then into the life of a grown up - to the office to work and to parties with no jelly!  The story was funny and kept the children entertained with some playful audience participation.  Some of the quotes from the children include: "It was moustache-tastic", "it was really good", "I really liked it" and "it was just so funny".

Tuesday 4th October - Harvest Service

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and friends who were able to attend our Harvest Service in the School Hall today.  It was a lovely service and all the pupils sang wonderfully well.

Monday 3rd October - Macmillan Grand Total

We raised a fantastic total of £217.36 for the great work that Macmillan Cancer Support to.  Again, a very BIG Thank You!

Friday 30th September - Marvellous Macmillan Coffee Morning

Thank you!  Our Macmillan Coffee Morning was incredibly successful and raised over £150 (and counting!) for the great work that Macmillan Cancer Support do.  The children did us proud and it was brilliant to see so many people in the School Hall.  Thank you so much for the cakes and for your generous donations.  Also a BIG thank you to all our parent helpers.

Tuesday 27th September - Chris Tomlinson (GB Athlete) Visit

A huge thank you to Chris Tomlinson, Olympic long jumper, for visiting us on Tuesday. We all enjoyed the circuit training he did with us and the answers he gave to our questions.  His advice was truly motivational, everything we do deserves 100% effort and nobody can ask for any more than that!  There can be little more inspiring than a top sporting star spending time working with our children.

Friday 23rd September - Ampleforth College Tennis Coach

"On 23rd September 2016 we had a tennis coach come in to teach us tennis.  Adam from Ampleforth College taught us how to serve, volley and rally.  At the end he gave us wrist bands and an Andy Murray poster.  Everyone thought it was great and hope to do it again."   Please click here to view the photographs

On Tuesday, 13th September 2016 we celebrated Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday.  We all dressed up as a character from one of his books.  We all loved dressing up and some pupils really put a lot of work into making their costumes.  Well done!
